The free translate extension that explains every English word you read

Lexigo is a free browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Select any English word on a web page and a small tooltip shows its translation into your language, its meaning, its pronunciation and, if you ask, an AI explanation of what it means in that sentence. It works without an account; a free one keeps the words you save.

What the tooltip does

Select a word. Understand it on the spot.

Lexigo opens right where you read, so you never leave the page to look a word up.

Translation in your language

The word in any of 19 languages the moment you select it: Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Turkish, Portuguese, Arabic and more.

Meaning and pronunciation

Every sense of the word in plain English, its IPA and a button to hear it, from Lexigo’s own dictionary.

Explain with AI

One click explains the sense meant in that exact sentence, in your language. It helps most with idioms and words with many meanings.

Save with one click

Keep the words worth learning, with the sentence you found them in. They come back in short reviews, right before you’d forget them.

Phrases and whole sentences

Look up a phrasal verb or an idiom the same way. Select a whole sentence and a Translate button appears.

Any page, PDFs too

Articles, email, documentation, social media. Right-click a word for “Define with Lexigo”; in a PDF the word shows in a notification.

No account needed

Permissions, in plain words

Why Lexigo asks to “read and change all your data”

Chrome shows this warning for any extension that can open on every website. Lexigo needs it for one reason: the tooltip has to appear on whatever page you are reading. The extension waits for you to select text. It doesn’t read the page, record the sites you visit or send anything until you select a word.

“Read and change all your data on all websites”

What it means: Lexigo can open its tooltip on any site. It reads only the word you select, plus the sentence around it when you ask for an AI explanation or save the word.

Lexigo uses your saved words and their sentence — never your browsing history.

Every permission and what it’s for

PermissionWhat Lexigo uses it for
All websites<all_urls>Opens the tooltip on the page you’re reading when you select a word. Firefox words the warning as “Access your data for all websites”.
NotificationsnotificationsChrome’s PDF viewer doesn’t let extensions show a tooltip, so a word you select in a PDF appears in a notification with “Save to Lexigo”.
Tabs and scriptstabs · scripting · activeTabAdds the tooltip to the tabs already open when you install or update Lexigo, so you don’t have to reload them, and opens the sign-in page.
Right-click menucontextMenusAdds “Define with Lexigo” when you right-click selected text.
StoragestorageKeeps your sign-in, your settings and the words you saved before signing in, on this computer.
Sign-inidentityLets you sign in with Google or Microsoft in a Lexigo window.
AlarmsalarmsEvery 15 to 30 minutes, updates the number of words due on the Lexigo icon and sends the usage counts.

Questions about the extension

Is the Lexigo extension free?

Yes. The extension, the translations, the AI explanations and the reviews are free, with no plan or paywall.

Do I need an account to use it?

No. Since version 1.4.5 you can select words and see their translation, meaning and pronunciation without signing in. A free account adds saving words, AI explanations, reviews and Lexigo Weekly.

Why does Lexigo ask to “read and change all your data on all websites”?

Because the tooltip has to open on any page you read. Lexigo only reads the word you select, and the sentence around it when you ask the AI or save the word. It doesn’t record the sites you visit.

Does Lexigo see my browsing history?

No. Lexigo never collects your browsing history or the pages you visit. It keeps only the words you save, their sentence and the page they came from, in your account.

How is it different from the Google Translate extension?

Google Translate translates. Lexigo also explains what the word means in that sentence, lets you save it with its context, and brings it back in spaced-repetition reviews so you remember it.

Which browsers does it work in?

Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Arc and other Chromium browsers through the Chrome Web Store, and Firefox through Firefox Add-ons. Safari isn’t supported.

Does the extension work on my phone?

No, phones can’t run browser extensions. The Lexigo web app works on any phone, so you can review your words there and use the extension on your computer.

Which languages does it translate into?

Into 19 languages, including Spanish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Vietnamese, Turkish, Portuguese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic and Hindi. The words you look up are English.
